Jules Higiro began leading youth activities for street children at his local church as part of a program where the church provided a weekly meal for children.
Jules is visited by sisters Jocelyne Murphy and Josephine Alexandre from Canada, who observe the program at the church where over 200 street children are cared for. Touched by the need, they return to Canada to begin Shelter Them.
Shelter Them Poverty Relief was formed as a registered charity in Canada by Jocelyne and Josephine to support the efforts in Rwanda. The first fundraising gala was held, raising $11k, which were used to support the Street Kids Feeding Program in Rwanda. Over 100 children were fed weekly.
The first Shelter Them Children's homes were established. Shelter Them started providing children with direct support in the form of shelter, food, education and health care.
Assumed responsibility for the Mpore PEFA orphanage which was in distress due to the death of the founder. Over 50 children were provided food, clothing and shelter on an ongoing basis.
First Shelter Them Mission Trip to Rwanda.
The process for organizational registration for Shelter Them Rwanda was initiated.
Closed Mpore PEFA orphanage and placed children with families through Hope for Homes organization. Shelter Them expanded the mission to include support for vulnerable families with children.
The Rwandan government committed to donate five acres of land to Shelter Them.
The Shelter Them Child Sponsorship Program was established, led by David Jenkins.
Support for the Bugasera District was initiated. Goats were donated to 55 families to provide nutrition and a source of income. 100 families were provided with health insurance through the Rwanda Social Security Board.
Shelter Them Rwanda was officially granted registered charity status.
The Rwandan government donation of five acres of land in the Bugasera district to Shelter Them for development into a Vocational Training center for children was officially transferred to Shelter Them.
Shelter Them USA is established as a registered 501(c) charity in the United States.
